Even though clinical trials are not mandatory for herbal supplements, the ingredients we use have well-known erection-supporting properties and a number of clinical trials have been performed by independent research institutes. Below, you will find a couple of the more interesting studies on each ingredient in the mixture.

Horny goat weed
Icariin is the most potent PDE-5 inhibitor.

A very recent study, conducted in 2010 by Mario Dell'Agli and his colleagues at the University of Milan, proved the effectiveness of Icariin, the main ingredient in horny goat weed. Icariin was tested against Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, to compare their effectiveness and side-effects. The scientists modified the icariin to obtain a derivative acting similarly to Viagra and potentially having fewer side effects because it targets the protein more precisely than sildenafil does.

Tongkat ali
The pro-androgenic effects of tongkat ali have been confirmed by a study using uncastrated male rats.

It is reported that a study conducted by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University Science Malaysia confirmed the connection between intake of tongkat ali extract and improved erectile function in males. The tongkat ali extracts impacted on the laevator ani muscle in both uncastrated and testosterone-stimulated castrated male rats after they received the extracts for 12 consecutive weeks. The extract was found to increase the leavator ani muscle significantly when compared with the control (untreated) in the uncastrated male rats and when compared to control (untreated) in the testosterone-stimulated castrated male rats.

Tribulus terrestris
Aphrodisiac properties of Tribulus terrestris (Protodiosin)

A clinical study conducted by the National University of Singapore examined the aphrodisiac properties of tribulus terrestis and obtained statistically significant results prompting the conclusion that tribulus terrestris might have an aphrodisiac effect, probably as a result of the androgen-boosting property of TT.

Semen cuscutae
Semen cuscutae is effective against chronic prostatitis.

A herbal formulation including Semen Cuscutae, given once a day for one to three months to treat 53 cases of chronic prostatitis, demonstrated an effectiveness rate of 90.6%.
